Prayers, Poems, Quotes & Songs

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord...
Ephesians 5:19
It was Pascal that said, "For earthly things must be known before we can love them, but divine things must be loved before we can get to know them." In a world where words are idly used, we lose ourselves amongst slang and a plethora of technological jargon.  That which is sacred and weighty has been pushed aside as irrelevant and too serious by a generation that does not have the stomach to suffer.

Prayer, poems, quotes and songs are birthed out of not only suffering but also the human experience that makes up our daily life.  This is the Creator's doing through vessels inspired by the eternal Spirit.  They bear with them the heft of something that has been born out of a fire.  Therefore, they last for generations and still touch the hearts of those who find themselves on the same path as those who have gone before them.

This page is to inspire and exhort you to consider the words written and sung and to read them with intention and reverence as He writes them on your heart.

The Spirit of Truth
 ~ by Art Katz ~

“To love truth is to desire the guileless transparency of Jesus more than anything else.  It needs to be a very powerful desire, because along with that transparency comes some things we may very strongly want to escape and refuse.  Receiving a love for truth and the Spirit who is truth means facing the prospect of life without recourse to exaggeration or white lies or flattery that I have grown accustomed to employ in order to enlarge or protect myself.  It means playing no roles and assuming no poses.  That frankly
frightens most of us.  The Spirit of Truth is going to lead us into all truth, even the parts that may humiliate us before men and leave us spiritually uncertain and perplexed and shatter our false images of ourselves, others, and ultimately God Himself.  That might not be what we were hoping for.  We were looking for something a little more quiet and much less costly.  Receiving the love of truth and the Spirit who leads us to all truth inevitably means suffering, because disillusionment, uncertainty, and humility are all forms of suffering.  And suffering is what I desperately want to avoid.  I will avoid it at all costs, even at the cost of truth itself; unless I love truth even more than I fear it.  It is not ignorance that keeps us from becoming true, it is cowardice.”

In all the manifold single events, He never loses His outlook over the whole.  In all the great events, He never forgets the small matters.  In the universal history, never the personal life story.  In the course of centuries, never the happenings of seconds.

Truth is everything as God sees it.

~ Jesse Penn Lewis
Every error in the church is in its last analysis an inadequate knowledge of God.
~ Arthur Katz

It remains, as in the times now past, that the greatest is the free gift of brotherly love, which is more glorious than knowledge, more marvelous than prophecy, and more sublime than all other gifts of grace.

It is not where we spend the greatest amount of time that molds us the most,
but whatever exerts the most power over us.

In our culture today there seems to be only two absolutes.  The first is that there are no absolutes except that there are no absolutes.  The second, everything must be tolerated, since there is no absolute truth.  As painful and uncomfortable as it is, we must stand up God's truth.

Do all things for the love of God.

We trust God only to the extent
we are given up to Him.

Have You No Scars?
~ by Amy Carmichael ~

Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?
I hear thee sung as mighty in the land,
I hear them hail thy bright ascendant star,
Hast thou no scar?

Hast thou no wound?

Yet I was wounded by the archers, spent,
Leaned Me against a tree to die, and rent
by ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned:
Hast thou no wound?

No wound, no scar?
Yet as the Master shall the servant be,
And, pierced are the feet that follow Me;
But thine are whole: can he have followed far
Who has no wound nor scar?

If God can accomplish His purposes in the world through a broken heart,
then why not thank Him for breaking yours?
~ Oswald Chambers

Mercy's Flow
~ by Pietra de Bod ~

Have I made that gaping wound in your leg?
Pressed those gruesome thorns in your head?
That horrible flow of blood,
Constantly streaming down as a flood?

Have I lashed your back with whip and chain?
Causing you to writhe in violent pain?
Have I pierced your side and nailed you down?
On that cross to lay my burden on your brow?

Have I tormented thee from six to nine?
Torn your back and slashed your sides?
Have I done this to my lover and friend,
In sorrow and heartache, I now lament!

Blood, blood, blood everywhere!
I’m stained, guilty of His despair.
Blood, blood, blood everywhere!
Now washed and have been spared.

Picture

 My God, how can it be,
That I have been forgiven by thee?
I, the guilty party of your death,
I, the one who caused this bloody shed.

How you love me through every pore,
As blood kept dripping on the floor.
And now I stand under mercy’s flow
As you now dare to call me your own.

I love thee for thy my sin did take,
Standing in righteousness, I’m saved,
from that dreadful lake.
Bought with divine blood
Saved by grace,
Forever, I’m yours, yours to break.

Let your life and love now flow
No longer mine self, but now your own.
Let it flow from this broken alabaster box,
Mercy flowing from the cleft of the Rock.

God does not do something to me if it's not for me.

True prayer is measured by weight, not by length.
A single groan before God may have more fullness of prayer in it than a fine oration of great length.

Bridal Prayer
~ by Pietra de Bod ~
Oh my Lord!  I am overwhelmed within.  For within my heart I find no hiding place from You.  You who pursue me so recklessly, how fierce is your love?!  For I find myself overwhelmed with dread for such a love as yours.  For You are Love.  But what kind of love is this?  It is spirit and it is heavenly, but I am dust and of the earth.

Your love is fiercely jealous and a consuming fire.  The reality that this love is so driven even to die for the object of His passion, scares me.  No, it frightens me.  Even though all reasoning can console me to rest in this love, I find myself running.  For I know now that it asks an ultimate price which I cannot give.  I am nothing.  What can I possibly give to You?  And yet, you ask my heart.

Oh my Love, You have my heart!  I am Yours.  I have no one besides You.  You are my assigned portion, my cup and You maintain my lot.  You are my strength, my joy, my shield and my Salvation.  You ask not that I would only give You my heart, but that I would give you my life.  That I would be Your lover.  A love completely and utterly devoted to You.
But I am frail, I am a Shulamite, and Your desire is for me.  To consume me.  It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of God.  Not only for sinners, but even the righteous.  For you carefully plan the destruction of self that You may form Christ in me.  It never becomes easier, but it becomes ever increasingly glorious!

Oh my Beloved, draw me to You.  For in my longing for you, even though I hide, my soul thirsts for You.  I desire You alone and feel that I would die without your presence with me.  You are the very air that I breathe, my life.  Like a moth to a flame, the flame of Your love, I am drawn to you.  Consume me, my Lord, consume me.  Your love is better than wine.  Intoxicate me.   Draw me into Your embrace until we are one.  Kiss me, with the kisses of your mouth and cover me with your mantle.  I am yours.

Draw me Beloved.  Come Lord Jesus come!

I must give myself away
for the sacrifice was consumed.
~ William Bromwell
Prayer requires more of the heart
than the tongue.
~ Adam Clarke

The Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Be Thou My Vision
~ by Mary Elizabeth Byrne ~

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

The Fountain of Living Waters
~ by Charles Wesley ~

A fountain of life and of grace
In Christ our Redeemer we see;
For us who His offers embrace,
For all it is open and free!

Jehovah Himself doth invite
To drink of His pleasures unknown,
The streams of immortal delight,
That flow from His heavenly throne.

As soon as in Him we believe,
By faith of His Spirit we take,
And freely forgiven, receive
The mercy for Jesus’ sake;

We gain a pure drop of His love,
The life of eternity know,
Angelical happiness prove,
And witness a heaven below.

For earthly things must be known before we can love them,
but divine things must be loved before we can get to know them.
~ Pascal
Even Unto Death
Song of Martyrs
Jesus
The very thought of You
It fills my heart with love
Jesus
You burn like wildfire
And I am overcome

Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

Jesus
You are my only hope
And You, my prize shall be
Jesus
You are my glory now
And in eternity

Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
Yeah, Lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

In my darkest hour
In humiliation
I will wait for You
I am not forsaken

Oh, I lose my life
Oh, my breath be taken
I will wait for You
I am not forsaken
One thing I desire
To see You in Your beauty

You are my delight
Yeah, You are my only
You have sacrificed
Oh, Your love is all consuming
You are my delight
Yeah, You are my glory
Oh, You are my glory
Oh, You are my glory
Yeah

You're the lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You
You're the lover of my soul
Even unto death
With my every breath I will love You

I will love You
Even unto death, I will love You
With my every breath I will love You
Jesus
The very thought of You

The very thought of You
